I encourage folks to get involved because it's the only way to make a real difference.Shaynanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-151096942903989101.post-52447454004776379092010-02-10T08:21:50.657-05:002010-02-10T08:21:50.657-05:00Hey Shayna

I am just now becoming more familiar with DeKalb district goings on. This is my second time reading DeKalb Watch. As a stay-at-home, self-employed dad, nonpracticing lawyer, I was extremely moved and inspired by your article.

I was talking with some parents yesterday. They informed me that there is a real possibility that we will see the end of DeKalb's pre-k program. Despite pre-k being funded by the state, DeKalb has to pay for the parapro's, so they are considering cutting pre-k a necessary, (and I guess) smart budget cut! I am appalled! Drawing a connection, from what you wrote, this well drastically drag affect kids from the socioeconomic backgrounds you mention. As you so eloquently described, there is a big picture here.....the connectedness here shows what a great impact eliminating pre-k from DeKalb would have on our entire county's future! I say we need to do whatever we can to stop the powers that be from obliterating education. Is the irony, of compromising the one thing for which their jobs exist and for which the state lottery program exists, so lost on them? Or are they really that plain selfish that they would sell out the future of their own DeKalb county neighbors and children, all the while padding their incomes and giving themselves raises and spending exorbitantly on items of little or no consequence to the furtherance of the system's real goals?

Well, I have a field trip to chaperone. Take care, and thanks again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-151096942903989101.post-44978931645524976782010-02-05T19:12:38.063-05:002010-02-05T19:12:38.063-05:00Shayna, great article. The state has 1/2 billion dollars in reserve I hear now from the lottery for education this year.

We do need more money spent on pre-K. We also need more money spent on remediation of our at-risk students. These students need pulled out of the mainstream and need the one-to-one help that they deserve to catch up. They are worth the month now verses the money later.Ella Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16485840445272819682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-151096942903989101.post-81815209095375023842010-02-05T18:42:03.968-05:002010-02-05T18:42:03.968-05:00Shayna -- With all the negative stuff going on you...Shayna -- With all the negative stuff going on you should be commended for your determination to press forward on behalf of all kids. The state is sitting on a virtual gold mine of cash - lottery money that is supposed to be spent on education.Cerebrationhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11161868015604029471noreply@blogger.com
