Hurrah for Southwest DeKalb Marching Band

The wonderful Southwest DeKalb High School marching band played and marched in the Rose Bowl Parade today in Pasadena, California.  They were one of only 13 bands invited to perform. Awesome job guys - we're all very proud of you!

Thanks Cere for posting this -- many of us are very proud of the SWD band. That they were invited and able to attend at all speaks volumes about the talent of this organization and the support they receive. Great job SWD Band!

When any DeKalb school, students, or employees do something as noteworthy as this, we should all be proud! Congrats SWD on this accomplishment! You represented us well.

As long as we have the band and the principal says so, guess SWD is not the ghetto after all. That's what it says in my child's year book anyway.

This is the kind of stuff that Atlanta media doesn't seem to publish enough of - there are good things going on in DeKalb - even in South DeKalb..... Just a side note, you can always tell someone who's never been to the area when she can't properly say "DeKalb" :)

Great job Panthers!!!!

That's the same band as this --

This video captures everything that is wrong with DCSS. The SW DeKalb drum majors got an AWARD from the DCSS for this production.

Makes you feel really proud.

What is the reading and math level of the band members?

Isn't SWD the place that has the demoted AP with female issues? And the place where the boys and girls did the dirty dancing while the teacher was in the classroom? What kind of culture do they have in that place? My friends who graduated from SWD in the 70's remember it as a great school. What has happened down there?

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. There is a story about many schools in DCSS that some would prefer remain quiet.

What, exactly, does that mean? I don't think there are such stories about, say, Druid Hills. We pay a heck of a lot of money in property taxes. Most of the problems that are dragging down property values seem to be emanating from one particular part of the county.

Hey if DCSS gave an award to the drum majors for the video, maybe someone (or 2 if it's too long) should show it during public comments to reflect on what a fine example of involved high school kids in South DeKalb.... I say it reflects the enormous cultural divide that no one is willing to really address or discuss that underlies the entire problem.

Kudos to the SWD band. You represented us well at the Rose Bowl.

@ anon 12:05 APPALLING video on this you tube link.... Is that really representative of the band for SWD? You have to be kidding that DCSS gave an award for this piece of filth. If you have not taken the time to see this video - do so, you will be further frustrated if not surprised if indeed our allustrious school system did reward such behavior.

Before you all get too carried away - this video is quite old - it's been on the internet a few years. This is not the current SW band... If you go looking, you can find some appalling videos from students at just about any high school. This SW band that performed at the Rose Bowl did a fantastic job!

Okay, that is a little better.... But, did DCSS really acknowledge in a positive manner such a sexist, profanity laced example of poor taste?

Not that I've ever been aware of.

The SW band is amazing. Take a look at the website and discover the amazing credentials of the band faculty. Also look at the movie Drumline that they worked on. Terrific example of academic and personal values. There is a bulletin board....read the out of state university band leaders asking for applications from graduates

I think what every school neds is some special program to be proud of.

I also wonder if say a student planned to major in music, perhaps aspire to music education from another part of the county would be able to attend SWDeKalb based on a proven skill and interest.

So - just to prove a point - here's a video from around the same time of a senior prank at Lakeside. Would you make the same blanket statement about Lakeside "culture" after viewing this?
